Friday the 13th

I’m not a big fan of remakes, but the creators of the new Friday the 13th won’t be doing the original much of a disservice by coming up with a new version of the classic slasher movie. Not that the 1980 version doesn’t have its charms: Betsy Palmer is a wonderfully overblown “surprise” killer; Kevin Bacon gets turned into sausage; and the ending with the mutant child bursting from the water is genuinely creepy to this day. But it wasn’t until Friday the 13th Part II that the series really found its stride, and not until Friday the 13th Part III that Jason put his iconic hockey mask on for the first time. The new “reimagined” movie looks to be a smooshing together of everything considered effective in the first several movies, along with digital age visuals, surround sound, and jerky cam. Unfortunately, it looks like stuff we’ve seen hundreds of times before, and with the horror genre currently as cold as the winters at Crystal Lake, the producers might very well be looking for hockey masks to hide their faces this weekend. - Demon
