Latin Dragon
Originally released 2004. Revisited by Demon 2008

With its doofy title (puh-leez!), I didn’t expect much from this martial arts actioner other than some Latino dude kicking ass. The movie delivers on that promise, and is surprisingly entertaining along the way. The story itself is strictly paint-by-numbers as the mysterious hero, Danny Silva, returns home from various badass activities (escaping from military prison, assassinating people, etc), to find the neighborhood plagued by gangsters of both the vato and corporate varieties. Danny does what any proud warrior would do on seeing his homeland under attack – he goes salsa dancing. Realizing his dance moves (and his worthless cop brother) are getting the neighborhood nowhere, Danny uses his karate skills to chop the criminal organization to pieces and restore power to the people. Martial arts master Fabian Carillo, as Danny, may not quite have the acting chops to match his karate ones, but he infuses the role with likeable confidence. Lorenzo Lamas does stock work as a rival badass while Gary Busey steals scenes with great bits of mean guy dialogue.
