Predators
According to Variety, Adrien Brody is slated to play the role of Dutch, previously played by Arnold Swarzenegger, in a reboot of the Predator franchise. Predators is being helmed by Robert Rodriguez, and is supposed to follow a story similar to the original movie where crab faced aliens on safari to hunt humans take on a batch of special forces soldiers in the jungle. Ulp.
It’s getting to the point with all these remakes and reboots that I feel like I should have a stock piece of criticism to paste into articles lamenting the death of original ideas in Hollywood. I find it sad that talented directors who have proven themselves capable of making interesting, original films spend years of their lives retreading the tires on old concepts instead of using their abilities to produce new stuff. But what’s really unforgivable is when the original material is so great to begin with. Like the original Predator, hands down one of the best science fiction action movies ever made. And then along comes Adrien Brody…
I suppose after shelling out tens of thousands of dollars, reading countless pages of intellectual blather, and writing god knows how many thoughtful papers in college en route to a degree in film criticism, I should have something more sophisticated to say then what I’m about to say:
What the fuck?
Brody is of course a wonderful actor, but an action hero? I guess he does look a bit like Christian Bale, at least in the Machinist role, but I’m having a hard time imagining him pulling this off. Certain Arnold’s shirt is a big one to fit into. Apparently the studio figures with enough fakey martial arts and digital firepower anything is possible, and with Rodriguez directing — well, looks like the circus is coming to town.
