Titanic: Judging a Film by its Context

By Demon

I watched the Awards, despite not having seen Titanic. This didn’t mean I was unaware of the movie by any means. Indeed, by the time awards night came around, I felt like I had seen the movie several times. During the Titanic passion I was working a cubicle job and was surrounded in froth: Titanic screensavers, endless conversation, and of course the Celine Dionne nailscratcher with Kate Winslet sobbing and Leonardo DiCaprio huffing his last oxygenated breath.

But the worst of it was when my boss forced the company to read her own scripted version of the last days of the seafaring bucket. This was her contribution to our weekly pep meeting. She followed the reading by moralizing about company creed and teamwork. One of her comments started with, “there were heros and there were villains on that day.” It’s one year later now. My boss is fired and I still haven’t seen the movie.
