A friend recently asked me to recommend some outlandish movies along the lines of Army of Darkness, Gummo, and Cannibal! The Musical (would make a great triple feature). I’ve reprinted the list here for your consideration. These are recommendations — meaning, they aren’t just weird-for-weirds-sake movies. They are excellent quality, entertaining movies you would actually want to watch.

Forgive me if some of the titles here have become well-enough known over the years as to be borderline mainstream. But in this day and age of 400 channels, you never know what has slipped by unseen. Without further ado…

TOP CULT, WEIRD, AND OUTLANDISH MOVIES

1. Early Peter Jackson stuff.
Meet the Feebles for sure. Bad Taste and Dead Alive. It’s hard to believe Peter Jackson directed Lord of the Rings after you see his early films.

2. Stuff by Werner Herzog can be really tripped out.
Try Even Dwarves Started Small if you’ve never seen it. That’s definitely one of his more oddball ones. The documentary Burden of Dreams shows him making a movie in the jungle, which is pretty wild.

3. Strange yet brilliant documentaries.
I’d recommend Vernon, Florida (about the strange characters who live a tiny backwater town in Florida), Gates of Heaven (about Pet Cemeteries), and Chicken Hawk (about the infamous NAMBLA organization).

4. Anything by John Waters.
But especially the early stuff: Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Desperate Living.

5. The Hanzo the Razor trilogy.
Hanzo: Sword of Justice, Hanzo: The Snare, Hanzo: Who’s Got the Gold? Be forewarned, they are really messed up!

6. Some good horror/comedies.
Severance, Bubba Ho-Tep, American Werewolf in London, Piranha, Slither, and of course, The Lost Boys.
