Versus (2000)
Two escaped prisoners clash with gangsters on the outskirts of a mysterious forest. What starts like Reservoir Dogs quickly transforms into Evil Dead as fallen gangsters claw their way to life to seek revenge on the living (the forest isn’t called the Forest of Resurrection for nothing). What transformed into Evil Dead now transforms into the Matrix as kung fu and gunplay take over with hyperkinetic fervor. Before director Ryuhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train, Alive) is through, we’ve experienced half a dozen action genres without leaving the simple forest setting a single time. It’s such great fun to watch you don’t even mind that the story itself (something along the lines of Highlander, just to name yet another film) gets completely lost in the smoke somewhere.
FINAL NOTES: EVIL NUMEROLOGY
I would be remiss as a contributor to Movie 666 if I failed to mention the 666 reference in this movie. The mysterious forest harbors a mysterious portal that leads to the mysterious “other side.” The portal in the movie (which we never see) is portal 444 of 666 total portals on earth, which means if there are 665 additional places like the forest in this movie, we live in a very strange and dangerous world indeed.
